More to the point, why was McLaren appointed in the first place? Personally, I wouldn't have sacked Sven. He was hounded out of the job by the media despite having done a pretty good job given the players he had to work with. But once the Swede had gone why appoint McLaren? What's he achieved? Does anyone really think England will be more successful under him than they were under Sven? Anyway, as to the question, now we're stuck with McLaren my answer to your question would be that it was madness to drop Beckham. He may be past his best, a little slower and a little injury prone. But he's still world class, proud to wear the England shirt and would walk into most other European sides. I think we're going to struggle under McLaren...

well i agree with the bit about why maclaren ,and not getting rid of becks but for me the sweede had lost the plot,he should never have got this far for me,okay i supose you couldnt really knock his record ie wins but we were playing far too deep at times for the way the english boys are used to playing, for me el tel was the man but the bigwigs at the fa were scared of his wide boy image, maclarens only asked him to be the number 2 to boast his image with the media,he should have gone with the sweede, sammy lee didnt stick around for long once maclaren was put in charge, shearer saw through him also, becks quit the captains job because he knew he couldnt work with maclaren and jimmy greaves is quoted as saying maclaren is a under achiver with friends in high places within the fa,got to go going out for dinner, the missus is giving grief about getting ready so im going.
